Multiplayer Solitaire

The very name of the game solitaire implies a single-player game, but in fact solitaire multiplayer games do not just exist, but are very popular. Solitaire multiplayer is a different way to enjoy the game socially and to have a bit of friendly competition, but you may naturally be a bit confused about what multiplayer solitaire might entail. There are certainly more than a few ways of doing it, but classic solitaire remains the most popular form of multiplayer solitaire.

Today, we’re going to break down everything you need to know about solitaire multiplayer.

Rules of Solitaire Multiplayer

The rules of solitaire multiplayer are as follows:

  1. Each player needs their own deck of cards. There are many ways to play multiplayer solitaire, but generally you will need a deck of cards for each player. Classic Klondike Solitaire is the usual form that is played for multiplayer solitaire.
  2. Each player must then build sequences in descending value and alternating color. Players will be trying to build sequences more quickly than the other players in order to get access to cards needed for the foundation piles.
  3. Score piles are kept during play and typically placed in the center of the table. Scoring rules may be slightly different depending on the version you are playing, but typically scores are kept based on the number of cards you’re able to play into the foundations. So, each player should have four score piles. Foundations are built starting with ace and then ascending up by suit until every card has been played to the foundations.
  4. When no one can make a legal move, or one player has finished their score pile, then the round is over. You may play several rounds per game, and whoever has the highest cumulative score at the end is the overall winner.

This covers the rules of solitaire multiplayer; now let’s look at how to set it up.

How to Set Up Multiplayer Solitaire

It’s easier than ever to play solitaire multiplayer online these days, but playing physically is a great option as well. The setup of multiplayer solitaire card game is as follows:

  1. You will need to set up separate, ordinary solitaire arrangements for each player. As mentioned, each player will need their own deck, and the following instructions for set up must be followed by each player.
  2. Seven tableau piles must be placed to form the basis of the setup. These tableau piles will have an ascending number of cards: starting with one on the left, and up by one until you have seven cards on the far right.
  3. In each tableau, only the top card is face up. All cards below the top card are face down to begin with so you cannot see what the value of the card is. When a face down card becomes the top card in the tableau pile, it is then turned face up.
  4. The rest of the deck is then dealt to the stockpile. This can be placed wherever you like though it is often placed in the top left corner. You can deal one or three cards at a time from this, depending on the version you are playing.
  5. The foundation piles begin the game empty. As the aim of the game is to get cards, by ascending suit, into the foundations, these will be empty at the start of the game. These are typically placed at the top of the play space.
  6. You will need space in the center of the table. Score piles will be placed in the center of the table, so you’ll need space in the middle for that, too.
